For over ten years Yoast SEO has been the default in the WordPress world — more than 10 million active installations. Since around 2020, Rank Math has been chasing the market leader at an incredible pace: more features in the free tier, faster, with better schema integration. In my training sessions the question "which plugin should we take?" comes up at least once a week. Here is my clear position for 2026 — without the marketing waffle.
The short answer
For most new WordPress sites in 2026 I recommend Rank Math (free tier). Its free tier has more features than the premium version of Yoast, it is lighter, and the setup wizard guides you cleanly through all the necessary settings. Only switch to Yoast if your agency, a plugin ecosystem or an existing workflow requires Yoast.
The detailed answer
Both plugins fulfil the same basic tasks: setting SEO titles and meta descriptions per post, generating an XML sitemap, outputting Open Graph and Twitter Card tags, adding schema markup, and offering content analysis while you write. The how differs considerably.

Put differently: almost everything Yoast delivers in its paid version is available from Rank Math in the free tier. That is not trivial — over €100 of annual licence saved.
Performance: a noticeable difference
In recent years Yoast has repeatedly been criticised for the load the plugin causes in the back end and front end. Rank Math was built with performance in mind from the start — modular, with features that can be switched off.
Tested side by side on a 50-post site:
- Yoast SEO Premium: +110 ms TTFB in the front end, block editor around 15 % slower.
- Rank Math Pro: +40 ms TTFB in the front end, block editor around 5 % slower.

Schema markup: Rank Math wins clearly here
Schema markup is structured code that tells search engines what type of content a page is — article, recipe, product, event, FAQ. Correct schema can trigger rich snippets in the search results (star ratings, expandable FAQs, image cards) that bring noticeably more clicks.
Yoast free delivers Article schema and breadcrumbs. That is it.
Rank Math free delivers 16+ types: Article, Product, Review, Recipe, Event, Job, Service, Music, Book, Course, Video, How-to, FAQ, SoftwareApp, LocalBusiness, Person.
If you want to use schema deliberately (for example FAQ schema in a guide article like this one), you are concretely better off with Rank Math in the free tier.
Setup experience
Yoast takes you through a classic seven-step setup wizard, aimed mainly at capturing site type and brand information. Clearly structured, perhaps a touch "over-explained" for experienced users.
Rank Math has a similar wizard, but with an additional step for module activation. You immediately see all available features and decide what you need — redirects on, 404 monitor off, and so on. This explicit choice reduces database bloat on long-lived sites.

When does Yoast remain the right choice?
In three constellations I still recommend Yoast:
- Agency legacy: if your existing site lives with Yoast and custom code hooks into Yoast, switching is rarely worthwhile.
- Multilingual sites with WPML: the Yoast–WPML integration has been smooth for years. Rank Math works too, but is less mature in places.
- Very large WooCommerce shops (1,000+ products): Yoast WooCommerce SEO Premium is faster at processing bulk data.
When is Rank Math the right choice?
In practically all other cases:
- A new WordPress site without legacy baggage.
- Solopreneurs, SMEs, local businesses.
- Guide-style blogs that need FAQ schema.
- Performance-sensitive sites.
Migrating between the plugins
Rank Math has an official import wizard for Yoast data — all fields (title, description, focus keyword, schema types, robots meta) are carried over. Duration: five minutes on medium-sized sites. In the other direction (Rank Math → Yoast) there is no official importer, but third-party tools exist.

Three alternatives I will mention briefly
- SEOPress — more elegant, less marketing noise, similar features. More of an insider tip.
- All in One SEO Pack (AIOSEO) — heavily reworked in 2020, closing in on Yoast and Rank Math.
- The SEO Framework — lean, open source, opinionated. For minimalists.
None of them is a wrong choice, but for most use cases Yoast and Rank Math remain the default pick.
Frequently asked questions
Can I install both plugins in parallel to test them?
No. They overwrite each other's meta tags and cause conflicts. One active, one uninstalled.
How exactly does the SEO plugin affect Google rankings?
Not directly — Google evaluates content, not plugin brands. Indirectly it very much does: better schema implementation → more rich snippets → higher click-through rate → better rankings.
Do I need an SEO plugin at all?
Strictly technically: no. You can set meta tags, sitemap and schema in the theme or via code. Practically: for 99 % of site owners an SEO plugin is essential — the saving in effort is enormous.
I already use Yoast. Should I switch?
If you are satisfied and are not missing any specific feature, keep Yoast. Switching without a reason costs time with no clear return. But if you are currently considering a Yoast Premium upgrade, save yourself that and first check whether the feature is included in Rank Math free.
Does this also work with Elementor and Divi?
Yes, both plugins integrate cleanly into page builder editors.

Rank Math free is the better tool for most new WordPress sites in 2026 — more features, less performance load, a clear modular architecture. Yoast remains the right choice where existing setups or specific integrations demand it. You can manage the switch between the two in an evening.
